Do you know what TechCrunch, MTV News, Sony Music, BBC America, Bata, Nokia, eBay and Beyonce have in common?

They all use WordPress.

WordPress is a CMS (Content Management Software) that powers over 74 million websites, which is about 18.9% of all websites in the world.

Yes, there are many other great platforms, but we are going to focus on WordPress because of flexibility, ease of use, frequent updates and number of available plugins.

WHAT YOU NEED TO GET STARTED:

Every single one of these plugins has been tested on multiple websites and page loading time didn’t increase drastically. But please, install only plugins that you actually need and intend to use!

The beauty of WordPress is that you are not limited to creating blogs only. With this platform you can create eCommerce stores and regular business web sites.

So even if you need a professional looking website to showcase your business, there are ready made themes for that as well.

Most WordPress themes and plugins are free, however the more advanced ones are paid. You can look for premium themes and plugins on graphic and theme marketplace called ThemeForest.

When choosing a theme make sure that its responsive, which is just a fancy word for mobile friendly. This is because these days, depending of a niche, most people access websites through some kind of mobile device. Such as smartphone or tablet device. When a web site is responsive it means that every page element will resize according to width of a device, so it will fit perfectly on any device and zooming in and out won’t be required in order to surf through website.

If you have basic knowledge of HTML and CSS then you can easily change any WordPress theme and create a custom one without purchasing premium themes. This means that you will need to create a child theme within an existing theme.

Once you are done with configuring and designing your blog then its time to start driving traffic to it. Without visitors, your message won’t be heard. There are number of ways to drive targeted traffic to a blog. But we can summarize the most important ones:

– Search engines
– Social media
– Referral traffic from other web sites
– Paid traffic from display ads
– Direct traffic

In order to achieve high positions on Google for your target keywords you will need to optimize your website for search engines. This process is very hard these days, but in general it consists of two parts, on-page and off-page SEO.
