Welcome to video number three in our How To Start A Blog series. In this video we are going to show you how to set up WordPress, install a free WordPress theme and learn a little WordPress SEO and get some assistance in that area with a plugin that almost everyone uses.

First we want to go to our WordPress Login page and log in, and that page will be whatever your blog url is plus, a slash and wp-login.php and that would take you to a screen that looks somewhat like this. And then you put in your Username and your password and hit log in and you will be taken to your WordPress dashboard, which looks like this.

Once you are there the first thing you want to do is go to your permalinks which is under Settings and then Permalinks. When you get there you want to set them to post name so your posts come out with the name of your blog and then the name of your post. This helps shorten your url to a more readable format plus its better for SEO and it helps with some plugins as they won’t work with any of these other settings.

Next, go to Settings General and when you get there, make sure your site title is there and then put in something to be more descriptive and more SEO friendly than Just Another WordPress Blog such as, a clever saying or something that has good SEO value already like one of your sites keywords.

Next we want to install a few more plugins to get your site up and running. You want to add the plugin called All In One SEO that makes your WordPress SEO as simple as pie. It’s easy to install after you search for it and find it you just click install and then it will appear in your sidebar and you then need to set it up by putting in a Home Title, Home Description and Home Keywords.

Next go down to the bottom and click Update Options and you don’t really need to worry about anything else except for maybe the Post Title Format, I usually take out the line here and anything after the post title tag so the name of your blog doesn’t show up in every single blog post.

This is basic SEO for WordPress and SEO is a bit more complicated, but this will at least get you started.

Some other plugins I use that are options for you are:

Optin Forms – for when you are ready to start a mailing list it lets people subscribe to your newsletter.

Link Hopper – For when you want to link out to a possible affiliate product, but you don’t want people to see what that link is.

Contact Form – So people can contact you from your blog without you having to put your email address somewhere on your blog for all the world to spam you.

Facebook Comments by Fat Panda – I’m only going to recommend this plugin here if you want people to be able to leave Facebook comments on your blog. However, this plugin is a little complicated to set up and requires a video all on its own to see how it’s done, but it is well worth using because everyone’s comments as well as your responses can appear on Facebook. Look for a video on how to set up Facebook Comments soon. There are also very good instructions for set up on the developers site as well.

Efficient Related Posts – This is a great plugin for when your readers get to the bottom of your blog posts, they will then have suggested posts so they can read more articles on your blog. It really helps keep people on your blog, reading more of your stuff.

Quick Adsense – This one is also a little cumbersome to set up so it too requires its own video. It will help you easily set up advertising on your blog and run Google Adsense efficiently which is a great way to earn some good revenue for your blogging efforts. Adsense is one of the premier ways to make money blogging.

All these plugins are not necessary to start blogging, but you might eventual want to do some of these things mentioned here and this is what I use that helps me be more productive and earn some money while running my blogs.

And lastly, lets take a quick look on how to install a free WordPress theme.

Go to Appearance in the sidebar and click on Themes and here you will find all the WordPress themes you already have installed. To find more themes, just click on Add New and see all the ones Featured and then click on Popular to see more than 1,700 additional themes.

You can scroll through the hundreds of themes here and you can preview what they will look like before you install it. And when you find one you like, just click the install button and that will automatically download it to your site, but don’t worry, it won’t actually activate it.

Well, we hope that was enough for one video on How To Start a blog and set up your WordPress plugins and themes.
